One of our favourite aspects of Melbourne’s north is the eclectic array of lesser known boutiques tucked away at every corner. There are enough of them out there to keep even the keenest of suburban explorers busy for countless hours. We recently asked Katelyn Sangalli, our resident fashion writer, to tell us her pick of some of the best boutiques in the region. She was keen to point out that all the stores below were found organically while exploring the northern suburbs. So if you’re hunting for the quirky or the unique, or just need some retail therapy, be sure to check out these gems.
Martin Fella Vintage
Located on Queensberry Street in North Melbourne, Martin Fella stocks a selection of vintage mens and womens wear, as well as an abundance of vintage homewares. You can get lost for hours browsing through the store. If you’re a size six redhead, there’s a rather divine Chanel blouse I’ve been eyeing up, which has your name on it.

The Gently Unfurling Sneak
Keep strolling down Queensbury Street and you’ll stumble across this extravagantly named store. With beautiful designs across clothing, prints and cards, this store allows you to pick up a gift or two for a loved one, or yourself! The best part? The focus on ethics and an environmentally friendly supply chain that features in the production of their garments.

I first stumbled into Kleins almost ten years ago by accident whilst visiting Melbourne on holiday. Located on Brunswick Street in Fitzroy, the store stocks an abundance of lotions and potions. Perfect for picking up a last minute gift, or for more self-gifting! I highly recommend anything by fragrance house Fragonard.

I came across Lauren Marinis many years ago and fell in love with her Gilda heel. With a shop front now located on Rupert Street in Collingwood, its now even easier to fuel my shoe addiction. While you’re there, check out the newer silhouette- Betty.

This place is not only a pandora’s box of all things wonderful, sparkly, shiny and glittery, but also boasts one of the most impressive collections of traditional vintage wear I’ve come across in the north. Their range features a perfect balance of both the contemporary and the vintage, and alongside the clothing you will find a magical collection of jewelry and accessories. To top off the repertoire, there’s a section dedicated to vintage nic nacs in which you will find everything from retro signs to old toys, gadgets and other oddities. The store brings together over 40 specialist designers and collectors and the range is forever evolving, making regular visits a must to ensure you don’t miss out on the next once in a lifetime find. For me, Vintage Garage truly demonstrates why Melbourne’s north is undoubtedly one of the best quirky shopping destinations in the country.
