There is a bakery nestled along Sydney Road in Brunswick that has a special place in my heart. Now that may sound a little over dramatic, but let me explain to you why.
When I first arrived in Melbourne a few years ago, I had no idea what to expect. I didn’t know anyone and had never even seen Melbourne before, apart from what I had seen in ads for Underbelly on TV years ago. I had just awoken from a 13 hour drive and only had one thing on my mind. Food.
Sydney Road seemed the obvious place I should start my search, as I was led by my nose through a sea of foreign yet mouth-watering aromas. Eventually I stumbled upon a giant A1 sign and unknowingly wandered into one of the best places I have ever eaten at. A1 Bakery.
Now that my sentimental attachment has been established, let’s dig in as to why A1 Bakery an absolute ‘must do’ on the Sydney Road checklist.
First of all the food is freshly made to order. No display cases offering food that was cooked a few hours ago and never once have I eaten here and found the food subpar. The bakery seems to hold itself to its own standards, which probably explains why they are never short for customers.
So let’s talk menu. A1 offers a simple yet vast selection of delicious Lebanese comfort food guaranteed to satisfy any customer. From the peckish to the ravenous, their menu will have something for you. A1’s amazing selection of pies and pizza are guaranteed to start your morning on a high note. Everything from zaatar, meat, vegetable, garlic and chicken pizzas, to shanklish and cheese pies, A1 has your taste buds covered.
For me, I cannot go past their platters. This is where A1 bakery made me fall in love with Lebanese food. The chicken tawouk platter is the hero of the menu; this amazing platter consists of beautiful marinated chicken tightly packed into a toasted wrap served with a side of chips, pickled cucumbers and turnips with a generous dollop of coleslaw and the best garlic dip you will ever taste. This platter is the kind of food that will stop conversations mid-sentence once the food is delivered to the table. If you are vegetarian, then their falafel platter and wraps are absolutely a must try.
Apart from the food, there is more to this bakery than their menu. Every time I eat here I am always surrounded by different cultures and backgrounds. Coming from a small town in Queensland I grew up on service station meat pies and never really encountered anyone from a different culture. It was so amazing to first walk into this bakery and see people from all walks of life sitting together and enjoying good food. It’s such a comfortable atmosphere to hear different languages combined with the amazing smell of A1’s food.
Make sure you check out this amazing bakery. You definitely won’t regret it.
