Best Burgers in the North, Probably all of Melbourne

January 6, 2017

I’ll Have a Double Triple with Extra Everything, Please!

It wasn’t that long ago when the only option available when it came to getting a burger was fast food chains or your local pub. That’s all changed these days with burgers the in thing. A plethora of top-notch eateries continue to open, serving everything from organic flame grilled beef to vegan options on brioche buns with a multitude of side dishes and sugary beverages.

Melbourne is home to a number of outstanding establishments, and to make sure your taste buds aren’t missing out, here’s our guide to the best burgers in the north.

Huxtaburger

Often cited as one of the original joints that helped kick-start the burger craze, Huxtaburger has been serving delicious range of American-style burgers for six years now. They are so in demand they now have multiple locations across Melbourne, but their first store in Collingwood is still the best. Along with their beef, chicken and vegan options – all named after characters from The Cosby Show – Huxtaburger serve a range of super sides, including crumbed prawns, chicken tenders and slaw, along with a selection of mini-burgers, shakes and desserts. If you can’t find a burger you like here then you really aren’t a burger fan.

Mr Burger

Beginning life as a food truck, Mr Burger is another of Melbourne’s most recognised burger brands, having expanded to five trucks and four stores in just four years of business. The orange décor and friendly staff provide a feeling of warmth while they keep things simple with the menu, offering five beef varieties and one chicken and vegetarian option. Along with a selection of shakes and the famous Boylan Soda imported from Brooklyn, Mr Burger’s Trucker Chips are hard to go past for those looking to get something a little extra with their fries.

The Local Burger Co.

The Local Burger Co. have one simple mission; “that is for you to taste and know a real burger,” and after visiting one of their three restaurants it’s hard to disagree. Their Carlton store has a simple setup with a solid selection of beef and chicken burgers along with a number of special burgers available for a limited time, including the Swedish Meatball and The Schnitzel burger. They also offer a range of tasty sides including hot wings, onion rings and chili cheese fries. There’s even the option to have a nude burger, replacing the bun with a side salad for no extra charge.

Easey’s

The thing that makes Easey’s standout is the graffiti covered train carriages that sit on the buildings rooftop, offering great views of the city as well as an array of several beers on tap. Aesthetics aside, it’s the burgers that will have you coming back for more. Owned by Jimmy “Burgers” Hurlston (author of The Burger Book Victoria) and Jeremy Gaschk, Easey’s offers four mouth watering burgers with the option to customise, adding everything from extra patties and bacon to potato cakes and sour cream. Sides include dim sims, mac n cheese and chili cheese chips, while donuts filled with milkshake-flavoured custard make the ideal after dinner treat.

The B.East

Not only is The B.East one of Brunswick’s best pubs – hosting weekly quiz nights, musical acts and special events – it also caters to burger lovers with eight organic beef, chicken and pork delights. Served on brioche buns and chock full of flavour, these burgers are an absolute dream, with the hot Dimmu Burger our pick of the bunch. A range of vegetarian and vegan options are available while their poutine is next level. For those wanting a challenge, if you can devour the B.East burger (triple beef) in less than 1 minute and 30 seconds you win a B.East tee and have your photo added to the wall of fame.

On It Burgers

On It Burgers proudly proclaim ‘Bacon Jam is Life,” and we totally agree. The Bacon Jammy is their number one seller and our personal favourite; undeniably due to the mouth-watering bacon jam smeared all over the glistening bun. On It will happily let you customise to your heart’s content and on our last visit we certainly didn’t hold back, gluttonously requesting a double patty, extra bacon, and then another extra patty. Yes, that’s right, we had a bacon triple with extra bacon and bacon jam. It’s worth noting that they only use premium, grass fed, whole muscle steak with no added junk to ensure their burgers really hit the spot.
