Burger joints are a dime a dozen these days but there’s something homely about the newly opened Pickle in Brunswick East. The unassuming restaurant is the brainchild of husband and wife team Gaby Zakharia and Anna Rogers and has a very mum and pop feel about it.
Previously a bike workshop, Pickle has been transformed into a basic but inviting space reminiscent of your favourite childhood takeaway shops. Seating up to 18 people, your best bet is takeaway, as the night I ventured to Pickle there wasn’t a free space available.
Keeping things simple extends to the menu and prices. There is a choice of eight succulent burgers and a kids option that includes a water, can of soda or juice box. The majority of the ingredients are sourced locally, with the buns coming from Ovens Street Bakery in Brunswick, the meat from Peter’s Meats on Sydney Road, Brunswick and dim sims from the famous South Melbourne Market.
Pickle’s take on the classic cheeseburger is a steal at only $7.90. Despite only being a beef pattie with a slice of cheese, pickles, mustard and ketchup, it’s one hell of a burger oozing flavour. Other notable burgers include the vegetarian My Goodness (roast veg patty, cheese, lettuce, basil mayo and sundried tomato sauce), dim sim filled Bruce Lee (beef pattie, dim sim, cheese, Asian slaw, pickled onion, srirachi mayo) and personal favourite the Lot (beef patty, bacon, egg, onion, cheese, tomato, pickles, beetroot, pineapple relish, lettuce, mayo, smokey bbq sauce, American mustard).
If you’re after a little extra with your burger you can choose from standard fries or sweet potato fries, along with onion rings, dim sims and a selection of dipping sauces. Pickle’s also offer a range of spiked shakes, with the Kahlua, espresso and vanilla bean shake a must try.
Pickle’s isn’t reinventing the wheel when it comes burgers, but this family orientated business is crafting delicious burgers and shakes that will leave you feeling well and truly satisfied.
