With Mother’s Day coming up on the 14th of May, it’s typical for most children and husbands alike to start panicking with the, ‘God, what does she like, want, need, expect!?’ mental alarm bells ringing. Whether your mother is expecting the world or not that enthusiastic at all, we at Inner Circle Magazine have put together some ideas to help you out to give your mother the day that she deserves in Melbourne’s north!
I, as a woman, enjoy food. It is common that most humans, in fact, enjoy a labour-free meal that tastes exceptional. The mother (also commonly referred to as the mum, mama, ma or mummy) is a caring, kind and beautiful type of human that will lavishly enjoy a meal she doesn’t have to cook. Taking her out for brunch is the perfect present that your mother will swoon for. Think about it: she doesn’t have to cook, you’ve taken her out to a gorgeous little café or restaurant, you’ve put thought into your research to find somewhere perfect (though don’t mention we’ve provided that information for you) and even better, you don’t have to cook, you get a tasty meal, and prices are typically reasonable so at least you can still enjoy the annoying, yet settling jingle of coins in your pocket post-mothers day.

To book, go to:
Melbourne Zoo – Elliott Ave, Parkville
There’s no such thing as a person who doesn’t like animals (I mean, surely), so why not treat your Mum to a day at the zoo! Relive your childhood memories and hers also as you check out the old animals and the new. There’s also tickets available for a Mother’s day lunch, which includes entry to the zoo from 11am (with a drink upon entry), canapés, a 2 course lunch and a Jazz band.

Cinema Nova – 380 Lygon St, Carlton
Maybe your mum just wants to chill out and kick back this Mother’s Day. Take the easy, entertaining, affordable option and go see a movie with Mum. I Am Heath Ledger and NT Live: Amadeus is currently showing for Mother’s Day this year. If these don’t fit her fancy, why not invest in a gift voucher? A pressure-less, effortless gift that your mum is sure to love.

Can’t be bothered going out for the day? No worries! Nothing wrong with the old-fashioned tradition of giving a gift this Mother’s Day (and, let’s be honest, who doesn’t get excited at the thought of ripping off wrapping paper.) Consider these present ideas that your mother will hold dear.
The Brunswick Street Bookstore – 305 Brunswick Street, Fitzroy
Give Mum a break for once and buy her a book. The Brunswick Street Bookstore has every book that matters, from new release to non-fiction, history, art, cooking, gardening, travel, and heaps more.
Here are some of my personal recommendations (which my mother also loved)
- The Book Thief: Markus Zusak (order online) – a fictional depiction of a German foster girl learning to read in the chaos of the Second World War.
- Gone Girl: Gillian Flynn – if you loved the movie, you’ll fall in love with this crime fiction about a man’s missing, psychopathic wife. For a tense and thrilling read, this novel is a must!
- Milk and Honey: Rupi Kaur (order online) – for that dose of visually relatable, romantic, heartfelt poetry, I can’t praise this novel highly enough. Bitter and sweet, Kaur’s words will be running through your mind all day.
Also consider buying a colouring book. It’s a therapeutic, anti-stress trend that gives Mum that ‘chill-out’ time to put her mind at ease.
