Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk – Movie

If you fancy a monday night movie to help ease you into the week, why not head over to Shimmerlands at Melbourne Uni in Parkville to catch Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk.
Based on the novel of the same name by Ben Fountain, under the direction of Academy Award winner Ang Lee (Life of Pi), Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk is an unnerving exposition of America’s perceptions of war, and the harsh realities of the battleground.
This week is the final week of the outdoor cinema, music and culinary showcase, so if you can’t make it on Monday, be sure to hit up one of the other events this week, or face a long wait for your next Shimmerlands experience!

Where We At?

Head to the Curtin on Tuesday for Where We At?, a look at Australian identity through the voices of people who call this place home. Expanding on the ideas of The Pin website, a website that deals with questions about race, identity and culture, co-creators Nkechi Anele (lead singer of Saskwatch, Triple J presenter) and Lucie Cutting (Multicultural Council of Tasmania), invite you to THINK, MEET and EXPRESS who we are in modern Australia.
Building on the growing conversations around race, identity and culture, The Curtin bandroom will be turned into an intimate seated event, hosted by Namilla Benson and joined by well known Australians and special guests.

Sam Buckingham, The Water – Acoustic Single Launch

After embarking on an extended sojourn through Latin America, penning songs for her forthcoming new album, Sam Buckingham reveals the album’s long awaited first single ‘The Water’.
“It’s a song about finding a space where you can allow light to come in. We all experience darkness and difficulty, and that’s an integral part of life – This song is about knowing there’s always somewhere to go to take a breath, connect with yourself and keep walking through.”
To celebrate the new single dropping, Buckingham plays a three date tour, including this one at Open Studio in Northcote, showcasing songs from the forthcoming album with special guest and long time collaborator Benjamin James Caldwell.
All shows are Pay What You Want, so there’s really no excuse not to get down there!

Alternatively, why not head to CERES for this ‘rewilding’ exploratorium?
The old ways are new again for the many now seeking to (re)learn the skills, practices and mindsets of our ancestors – everything from food to footwear. It’s a movement that’s become known as ‘rewilding’, a return to a wilder or more natural way of being.
Is it really possible to rewild while living in the city? If so, how? Clair Dunn, of Nature’s Apprentice, is planning to find out, undertaking a year of rewilding while living in Melbourne’s inner north, blogging as she goes.
You can join her for this potluck pottering exploratorium to share ideas, inspirations, experiences and stories.

Star Wars Destiny – Video Game Tournament

For all you video game lovers out there, why not head down to GateKeeper Games in Fitzroy North on Thursday to take part in this Star Wars Destiny Tournament.
The tournament is being held to mark the end of the league, and GateKeeper will be doing the league prizes and points tally as well.
This is a casual event so they will be abiding by FFG Tournament rules for in game, but sleeves/timing and other ‘side’ rules will be relaxed.
